TEKS 2.10A: Bar Graphs and Pictographs

      • Represent Data on Bar Graphs

        About this lesson

Learning Target: I can read a bar graph and create one from a table.

        Focuses On:

        • Reading bar graphs
        • Building bar graphs

        Builds On:

        2.10C

Write and solve one-step word problems involving addition or subtraction using data represented within pictographs and bar graphs with intervals of one

        Next Level:

        3.8A

Summarize a data set with multiple categories using a frequency table, dot plot, pictograph, or bar graph with scaled intervals

        Read More:

This lesson is designed to support student understanding of bar graphs.

The two instructional blocks in this lesson focus on reading bar graphs and building bar graphs.

In the first instructional block students look at the categories, data points, and intervals of bar graphs in order to answer questions about the data being represented. Students practice looking at the length of the bar graph to identify the number of data points.

The second instructional block focuses on students building bar graphs based on data provided in a table. Students choose or build bars that correctly represent the number of data points in a table.

Scaffolds and supports such as templates with the correct intervals already set up are intentionally built throughout the lesson to support conceptual learning.

In the first instructional block students look at the categories, data points, intervals and keys of pictographs in order to answer questions about the data being represented. Students practice looking at the the number of pictures on a graph to identify the number of data points.

The second instructional block focuses on students building pictographs based on data provided in a table. Students construct pictographs by selecting the correct number of pictures to represent the data points in a table.
