TEKS 5.13A: Structures and Functions for Survival
Structures & Functions
About this lesson
Learning Target: I can identify the structures and functions of different species and how that allows them to survive and have larger populations than other species.
Focuses On:
- Structures related to environmental needs
Builds On:
4.13A:
explore and explain how structures and functions of plants such as waxy leaves and deep roots enable them to survive in their environment
Next Level:
8.13C:
describe how variations of traits within a population lead to structural, behavioral, and physiological adaptations that influence the likelihood of survival and reproductive success of a species over generations

This lesson is designed to deepen student understanding of animal structures that develop in response to environmental needs.
The lesson begins by exploring how specific environmental challenges create survival needs and how animals possess corresponding structures that function to meet those needs. Students will then compare different animals, analyzing how specific structures can lead to advantages such as larger population sizes or the ability to inhabit a wider range of areas.
This lesson builds upon prior grade-level knowledge of how structures serve specific functions. It prepares students for standard 8.13C, where the concept of adaptations will be explored in greater depth.
