TEKS 5.12A: Organisms and Ecosystem Interactions
Ecosystem Interactions
About this lesson
Learning Target: I can determine what within an ecosystem is biotic and abiotic, and the type of interactions that is happening.
Focuses On:
- Factors that are biotic and abiotic
- Interactions in an ecosystem
Builds On:
3.12A:
explain how temperature and precipitation affect animal growth and behavior through migration and hibernation and plant responses through dormancy
Next Level:
6.12A:
investigate how organisms and populations in an ecosystem depend on and may compete for biotic factors such as food and abiotic factors such as availability of light and water, range of temperatures, or soil composition

This lesson is designed to support student understanding of biotic and abiotic factors and the interactions between them.
The lesson begins by defining biotic and abiotic factors, providing numerous examples supported by both text and visuals. It then explores the interactions within ecosystems, distinguishing between biotic-biotic and biotic-abiotic relationships to help students identify them.
This lesson builds on the student understanding from standard 3.12A that abiotic factors affect biotic organisms. It prepares students to analyze competition between biotic organisms for abiotic resources in standard 6.12A.
