TEKS 5.9B: Represent Paired Data on Scatterplot
Represent Data on a Scatter Plot
About this lesson
Learning Target: I can represent data on a scatterplot.
Focuses On:
- determining if there is a relationship between the two variables in a scatterplot
- labeling the axes of the graph
- determining the intervals
- understanding how to plot points on a graph
Builds On:
4.9B:
Solve one‐ and two‐step problems using data in whole number, decimal, and fraction form in a frequency table, dot plot, or stem‐and‐leaf plot
Next Level:
6.13A:
Interpret numeric data summarized in dot plots, stem‐and‐leaf plots, histograms, and box plots

This lesson is design to support student understanding of how to represent data on a scatterplot.
The lesson begins by giving an overview of what a scatterplot is and how it is used to represent discrete paired data. Students practice setting up their graphs by determining the interval of the graph based on the data set they are referencing in the problem. After students plot the points on the graph, they are asked to determine if there is a relationship between the two variables.
Sentence frames are intentionally built into the problem in order to provide scaffolding for students.
