This lesson is designed to support student understanding of determining which facts support or oppose an author's claim in an argumentative text. Students begin by completing a paragraph with words that contain silent letters and brainstorming facts that are included in an argument.
The two instructional blocks in this lesson focus on identifying facts in an argumentative text that support the authors' claim and facts that are included to oppose the author's claim. In the first instructional block students examine types of evidence that can be used to support a claim like expert statements, verified facts, research findings, and statistics. Students find examples of each in an argumentative text and explain how they support the claim.
In the second instructional block students find opposing facts and how the author disproves them in a text.
Argumentative passages are intentionally built throughout the lesson to provide practice and analysis at a high level.
