This lesson is designed to support student understanding of nonfiction text features and how they are used in informational texts to help readers. Students begin by combining simple sentences into compound sentences and explaining the differences between fiction and informational texts.
The two instructional blocks in this lesson focus on the text features in informational texts and how the features help readers find information. In the first instructional block students identify the text features that are commonly used in informational texts.
In the second instructional block students determine the different purposes of a variety of text features. Students will also practice using text features to find specific information in informational texts.
Passages are intentionally built throughout the lesson to support deeper understanding and allow students to practice the skill in context.
