This lesson is designed to support student understanding of figurative language as it is used in poems and the difference between the author and speaker in a poem. Students begin by creating new words with prefixes and suffixes and reviewing various types of figurative language.
The three instructional blocks in this lesson focus on figurative language in poetry and identifying the speaker and author in a poem. In the first instructional block students simply identify different types of figurative language that is used in various poems.
In the second instructional block students explain the meaning of different types of figurative language and analyze the author's use of the figurative language.
In the third instructional block students determine the speaker and the author in a poem and understand how they can be the same or different.
Poems are intentionally included throughout the lesson to provide practice and analysis.
