This lesson is designed to support student understanding of how affixes and roots can be used to determine the meaning of unknown words. Students begin by using affixes to define words and breaking apart words into their affixes and base word.
The two instructional blocks in this lesson focus on using the meanings of affixes, roots, and base words to determine the meaning of unknown words in a text. In the first instructional block students identify the meaning of common prefixes and suffixes and use this to help determine the meaning of unknown words.
In the second instructional block students are given the origin and meaning of common roots, and students use this information to define unknown words in a text.
Passages are intentionally built throughout the lesson to provide authentic opportunities to practice the skill.
