TEKS 4.3F: Evaluate Sums and Differences of Fractions
Use Benchmark Fractions to Evaluate Sums and Differences
About this lesson
Learning Target: I can determine if the sum or difference of two fractions is reasonable using benchmark fractions.
Focuses On:
- Adding or subtracting fractions with common denominators and then evaluate the sum in relationship to benchmark fractions
- Completing statements of reasonableness about the sum or difference of fractions with common denominators
Builds On:
3.3C:
Explain that the unit fraction 1/b represents the quantity formed by one part of a whole that has been partitioned into b equal parts where b is a non‐zero whole number.
3.3D:
Compose and decompose a fraction a/b with a numerator greater than zero and less than or equal to b as a sum of parts 1/b.
Next Level:
5.3H:
Represent and solve addition and subtraction of fractions with unequal denominators referring to the same whole using objects and pictorial models and properties of operations.

This lesson is designed to support student understanding of the relative value of the sum or difference of fractions with common denominators in relation to various benchmark fractions.
The two instructional blocks in this lesson are benchmark fractions and reasonable statements
The first instructional block begins by asking students to add or subtract fractions with common denominators and then evaluate the sum or difference in relation to benchmark fractions.
In the second instructional block, students must complete reasonability statements about the sum or difference of fractions with common denominators using statements such as: more than/less than half, about one whole, or about three-fourths, etc.
Partially completed equations are built into the lesson to scaffold student understanding.
