This lesson is designed to support student vocabulary and identification of coins and bills prior to moving on to adding a collection of coins together.
The lesson starts by counting collections of coins within 100 cents, then moves to including bills and writing in dollar notation. It ends with students understanding how to regroup a set of coins over 100 cents into $1.00.
The first instructional block highlights the name and value of each coin. Students identify and add the value of coins represented and then practice reporting the value in cent and dollar notation.
The second instructional block focuses on adding bills and coins. Students will identify how much a bill is worth and add problems involving bills and coins and report the value in dollar notation.
The focus of the third instructional block is regrouping when the value of coins is over 100 cents. Students practice regrouping coins over 100 cents and reporting the value in dollar notation.
Pictorial representations, models and example problems are given to support teacher instruction and autonomy as well as student understanding.
