This lesson is designed to support student understanding to identify and decode words with sound-spelling patterns such as eigh, ough, and en. The lesson starts with a quick orthographic mapping warm up, followed by explicit instruction on trigraphs and blends.
The three instructional blocks build upon each other as the lesson progresses. The first block focuses on explicit instruction of the sound-spelling patterns, followed by practice saying words that follow the pattern through a word sort.
The second instructional block focuses on breaking words into syllables to support decoding at the syllable level. Students will use words with these sound-spelling patterns to complete paragraphs of text.
The third instructional block culminates with practice spelling multisyllabic words that follow these patterns.
Passages are intentionally built throughout the lesson to support deeper understanding and put their learning into context.
