This lesson is designed to help students decode, spell, and understand common contractions based on each individual word meaning and identifying the letters a contraction replaces. Students begin by building common contractions they learned in second grade, followed by an introduction of contractions, what they are, and the parts that create them.
The two instructional blocks in this lesson focus on decoding contractions and spelling contractions. In the first instructional block, students understand the parts of a contraction, the letters being replaced, and the meaning of the contraction. Words are put into passages to create context around their new learning.
The second instructional block focuses on spelling contractions, providing the two words that need to put together. Students replace two words with the contraction.
Passages are intentionally built throughout the lesson to support deeper understanding and put their learning into context.
